Q: What is an essential oil?
A: Essential oils are extracted from certain spices of flowers, grasses, fruits,
leaves, roots and trees. Each individual oil has its own qualities and is used for much diverse purpose. It takes a great deal of work to produce a tiny amount essential oil. Sixty thousand rose blossoms are required to produce one ounce of rose oil, you can understand why it is that expensive!
Some essential oils are too volatile for hot water and steam distillation. These
are usually extracted with hydrocarbon solvents. The resulting substances,
known as 'concretes', usually contain a certain amount of wax and are solid.
Absolutes are purified concretes, derived by separating the essential oil content from the waxy, non-soluble part of the concrete. They are extracted using pure alcohol or liquid Carbon dioxide. Absolutes are highly concentrated, generally thick liquids, Some are solid or semi solid. Solvent extraction provides a means of obtaining a higher volatile yield from the plant.
Synergy Blends are mixture of two or more pure essential oils. By mixing
these oils together, a new chemical compound is created that is different that
its essential oil components .
Essential oil is used in more than just in aromatherapy, but also in a range of everyday articles such as health, toothpaste, gum, food flavorings, cosmetics, massage and other household products.

Illness:
When added to compresses, vaporizers, baths, or applied to the skin in a diluted form, essential oils can be used to treat everything from a fever to muscle cramps. Aromatherapy with geranium, lavender and bergamot can prove especially helpful in alleviating emotional distress such as anxiety and depression; add these oils to a diffuser, bath or candle and let them work their magic!
Massage:
This is one of the most common methods employed by aromatherapists. Massage relaxes the body and relieves stress and tension. The value of using essential oils in conjunction with massage lies in the fact that they can therapeutically affect both the emotional and the physical body. Fragrance acts directly on the deeper levels of the mind, whilst the therapeutic qualities of the oils themselves are absorbed into the skin.
Lotion:
Essential oils can be blended specifically for topical use in skin care.
Flower Waters:
Flower waters are old favorites in skin care, whilst essential oils are insoluble in water, they nevertheless transfer their fragrance and some of their healing properties to the water, Flower waters can also be used to cleanse and consecrate a sacred of magical space prior to ritual.
Baths:
Bathing with essential oils can make one feel like Aphrodite herself. It is a wonderfully sensual way of enjoying essential oils and attuning to their subtle energies.
Food:
Many essential oils are extracted from edible herbs and can be used in cooking and baking. Try flavoring your honey or whipped butter by adding a drop or two of a citrus or spice oil and blending well.
